6th Grade
Deconstructing a Popular Tune
|
Recently we watched this version of the Gotye song, "Somebody That I Used to Know" in class. We then analyzed the form and counted how many different things are happening at a time. Now we are looking at the music notation and learning to layer the different parts on classroom instruments.

6th grade students at Orenco have the opportunity participate in additional music instruction and performances by joining the school band. Students who learn an instrument in 6th grade have the option to continue in the middle and high school where they will have even more instrument choices and performance opportunities. We spend the first couple of music classes learning about the instrument choices for 6th grade and letting students try out instruments. In 6th grade students can play flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or baritone. Most students rent an instrument from a music store, but there are some school instruments available for students with a financial need. A large body of research shows that students who participate in music tend to be happier, healthier, and more successful in school.
